It seems like just about everyone these days is coming out with a new multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA. Although MOBAs have set a standard in the video game realm for digital transactions within the game itself, the experience still has noticeable places for improvements. Some heroes are more action-oriented, while others excel at providing support for other players.
Mobile gaming is also embracing the MOBA genre. There’s no doubt that League of Legends helped the video game genre become as big as it is, and without it, we’d all probably still be playing Habbo Hotel. This may sound a bit weird but Vainglory is the perfect MOBA game that has been perfected for touch-based gameplay.
Despite Arena‘s modified control scheme from something like League or Dota 2, everything feels accurate and easy to control. With new technologies regularly emerging in gaming, chances are that such developments may have the potential to push MOBAs to a whole new level.
As a follow-up to the original DotA, which was a community-created mod for Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Valve Corporation developed and, in 2013, published DotA 2 as a free-to-play game for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Appropriately named DotA 2, the game features an updated graphics engine with new playable characters.

The massive success of eSports has led to plenty of competition on PCs, but so far mobile games that are ready for professional competitive play have yet to really break through. In contrast with other MOBA games for iOS, battles in Planet of Heroes happen in a single lane, and there’s no gold to collect and no items to purchase. The original intent behind Heroes was for each game to last around 20 minutes, and DeShazer says that the team views the game as having three separate phases, which seem similar to those in other MOBAs: there’s the lane phase, where characters farm for experience until they’ve become powerful enough to try and impose their strength on the enemy, there are the mid game skirmishes, which involve ganking and lane ambushes, and then, finally, the teamfight phase, where the powered-up teams face each other head-on using the resources they’ve gathered up to that point.
